Generation of computer:

Generation of computer

First Generation:

  1. They are very large in size.
  2. They are very slow.
  3. They used vacuums tubes as memory device.
  4. They consumed a lot of electrical power.
  5. Storage capacity is too small.
  6. ENIAC,UNIVAC-I,EDSAC,EDVAC,IBM-701.

Second Generation:

  1. They are smaller ,faster & less expensive than the  first generation.
  2. They used transistor as memory device.
  3. They consumed less electrical power than first  generation.
  4. E.g. IBM 1620,IBM 1401,CDC 3600.

Third Generation:

  1. They were small, reliable & efficient than the first &  second generation.
  2. Integrated circuits were used in this generation.
  3. They consumed less power & heat than second  generation.
  4. They had faster & larger primary & secondary storage or  memory as compared to second generation.
  5. They were suitable for scientific & commercial  applications.
  6. E.g. IBM-360,IBM-370,VAX-750.

Fourth Generation:

  1. They are smaller, cheaper, faster & efficient than the  first, second, third generation.
  2. Microprocessor chips were used in this generation.
  3. They consumed less power.
  4. Palmtop, desktop belongs to fourth generation.
  5. E.g. 8086,8088,Pentium – IV,i3,i5,i7.

Fifth Generation:

  1. The computers having high processing capacity & Artificial
  2. Intelligence.
  3. The speed is extremely high than the any other generations.
  4. Self – decision capability.
  5. Very large memory.
  6. Can think & understand speech in natural language like
  7. human.
  8. It is also still in developmental stage.
  9. In this generation molecular energy, nano technology, neural  network, parallel processing had been developed.
  10. E.g. LISP & PROLOG Programming languages were used.
